Estimates and retainers

A quote or an estimate of the cost of the engagement is systematically communicated to the client, whether verbally or in writing. We take the client's personal and financial situation into account.

In keeping with the customary practices of the legal profession, an advance retainer on account of fees and expenses is generally required. The retainer is deducted from the total amount of the final fee note issued.

Matters withdrawn before completion

Once entrusted with a matter, the Firm may charge fees to its client — even if the matter is withdrawn before its completion — insofar as legal work has already been undertaken.

Costs and disbursements

The various costs and disbursements relating to a matter are re-invoiced to the client and are entirely separate from the fees. These may include, among others, bailiff's fees, court taxes, database research costs, shipping charges, photocopying, travel expenses, etc.

How fees are determined

As a general rule, fees are determined on the basis of several parameters, three of which are the most decisive:

• The complexity of the matter;
• The time spent handling the matter;
• The financial stakes it represents.

Our social commitment

As part of our pro bono commitment and in keeping with our highest value — “Serve first!” — our fees may be significantly reduced in light of our clients' social circumstances. We make it our duty to resolve as many family matters as possible, and we advocate for the defence of our clients' individual rights and civil liberties.
